The Badger Racing Team is comprised of members of the UW-Madison Formula SAE team. The team members range from freshman to seniors, from different engineering disciplines and computer science, to business and marketing students. All of the participants are serious automotive enthusiasts.

The team is composed of five special-interest groups: powertrain, suspension, brakes and controls, frame and body, and public relations. Each group is headed by a team leader and the whole organization is overseen by a faculty advisor. They design and fabricate the car themselves in their own facilities and then compete in the national SAE competition and regional autocrosses. The cars must be open-wheel, 4 stroke, and draw all their air through a 20mm intake restrictor. Other than other basic wheelbase/width and safety specs, the sky's the limit. This year, the competition was held in Pontiac MI at the Silverdome on May 18th thru 22nd, and our team took 3rd place overall - even outperforming entries from MIT and Australia and 136 others!

Students join the team by volunteering or enrolling in the courses Mechanical Engineering 491/492 Formula SAE, or Mechanical Engineering 291. Being a part of Formula SAE enables students a unique and rewarding experience to see a project through completion. The course is structured as a three-credit design elective, or a one-credit elective course, both of which count toward fulfilling College of Engineering graduation requirements.
